About Montessori
Montessori is an educational approach developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian physician and educator, in the early 20th century. The Montessori method is based on the principles of child-centered learning, independence, and respect for the natural development of each child. It involves mixed-age classrooms with specially designed materials for self-directed learning. Teachers act as guides, fostering curiosity and critical thinking. The method focuses on hands-on, experiential learning across various subjects, nurturing the whole child's potential intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically.
The lessons and activities done in the classroom are categorized into four main groups:
1. Practical LifePractical life focuses on helping children learn social skills and build
This area refines everyday gestures, activities and behaviours which the child sees the adults around him perform. Exercises focus learning on caring for himself and the environment, social behaviours and movement. This area develops concentration, co-ordination, social skills, and independence. |
3. LanguageThrough interactive material, children build upon their vocabulary and prepare to learn how to write. They will be introduced to the sounds of the letters of the alphabet, preparing them for when they start to read and write. Materials from other cultures are also integrated into their classroom life.
